An Historic Milestone when Liam Rosenior Overcomes Boundaries

"He is a quality coach who knows the game back to front, and that's the crucial factor.

"But, as Chelsea's first African heritage player, it would be dishonest to claim this news does not affect me."

Those are the sentiments expressed by the former Chelsea winger, who made his historic first appearance for Chelsea's senior side off the bench in April 1982.

This week, the club appointed RC Strasbourg boss Rosenior, 41, to be their next manager following the departure of Enzo Maresca.

The French club is part of a Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group that also owns the London club.

Statistics show only twelve of African or Caribbean heritage managers – excluding individuals holding temporary caretaker positions – in England's top flight since its inception 34 in the past.

"One thing that impresses me about Liam is that he was raised and played not far from here, he knows this area," continued Canoville.

"Whenever children observe someone like Liam managing their club, someone they can identify with, from a similar background, from a family that champions what's right… it is profound demonstrating that opportunities exist.

"So yes, this represents a massive step for Chelsea, for London, for all young person dreaming big.

"However, currently? We must support Rosenior, give him what he needs, and let the man do his work."

What Do the Numbers Show?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became the Blues' head coach in 1996 and became the Premier League's inaugural black head coach.

Twelve years later, by 2008, Paul Ince became the pioneering English black manager in the top flight after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo is the only other current Premier League gaffer from a minority ethnic background.

The shortage of ethnic minority managers across English football corresponds with an absence of diversity at executive level.

As per the BFP 2023's study, 43% of Premier League footballers come from black backgrounds.

However, research by the equality organization revealed only 3.2% of executive and leadership positions at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are from minority ethnic communities.

At first-team coaching positions, based on figures from eleven clubs, the figure is two percent.

Across all coaching positions – encompassing senior roles – from the same eleven clubs, the statistic is just five percent.

"He's certainly made history in terms of his appointment as a Chelsea manager, and we hope to witness more such appointments," stated the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know there is loads of talent present within ethnic minority communities... they desire the opportunity to demonstrate what they can do. We need to continue to striving to dismantle those barriers once and for all."

Furthermore, Rosenior is set to become the fourth full-time British managers presently in the Premier League – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – which trails Europe's other major divisions regarding national representation.

Sixteen out of twenty first division coaches in Serie A are from Italy, 11 in La Liga are Spanish, 12 in the Bundesliga in Germany and 10 of the 18 in France.

Current Blues caretaker manager Calum McFarlane said: "I'm sure all aspiring British coaches from an academy background are, in some way no matter who you support, rooting for Liam.

"It's really motivating for young English coaches in the system to witness someone land that job with his background and we hope he will be highly successful."

'Let's not forget – he's there on merit'

Leroy Rosenior, Liam's father, played for the likes of West London clubs, West Ham and Queens Park Rangers, with his coaching stint culminating in a brief stint in charge of then-League One side Brentford FC in 2006.

Two years ago, he received an MBE in that year's 2019 New Year Honours for services rendered to tackling discrimination in football and wider society.

When Rosenior Jr retired from playing he followed his father's footsteps. He started writing a column for a national newspaper, where in 2017 he acknowledged the lack of diversity among managers. He highlighted that ethnicity does not influence coaching skill and said roles should be given on merit.

He also made a point he would repeat: that significant lack of diversity leads to misunderstandings regarding footballers from different cultural and ethnic heritage.

In a podcast with The Athletic FC, Rosenior highlighted the way his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "difficult" and "emotional", but said he could relate to the Netherlands international with Nigerian parentage. Emegha is set to join him in moving from Strasbourg to West London this summer.

In subsequent Guardian columns, he also confessed to being "embarrassed" to hear an unnamed staff member utter a discriminatory remark. He vowed support for the Premier League's inclusion initiative and authored an open letter to the former US President during his first US presidency, accusing him of "overt" prejudice.

He has subsequently made his name in the dugout – first at Hull City, then Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney recently stating Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" after their time together with Derby.

Rosenior said goodbye at Strasbourg earlier this week prior to putting pen to paper on a six‑and‑a‑half‑year deal at Chelsea.

Chelsea boasted the top flight's first black boss with Gullit as well as the first black skipper named Paul Elliott.
